Michel Aglietta died on April 24, 2025 at the age of 87, after having accomplished a work that elevated him to the level of the world’s greatest economists. Michel Aglietta’s scientific work focused mainly on money, of which he was, with André Orléan, one of the first to recognize the dual function of exchange instrument and social and political institution. He was one of the most relevant analysts of the phenomena of financialization of the world economy, of the disruption of economic cycles, and of the financial crisis. With André Boyer, he was one of the designers of the theory of the regulation of capitalism. He also revealed the risks that the supremacy of the dollar poses to the world economy, and he proposed various solutions in favor of the diffusion of other alternative and even digital currencies.  His last thoughts focused on ways and means to strengthen the role of the euro in international trade, the strategic autonomy of the European Union, and better sustainability of its economic growth. With great prescience, he opposed the radical solutions advocated by populist parties, preferring “measured breaks” in favor of the common good.
For 40 years, the Turgot club has read and reviewed his works, the jury has awarded him a Turgot Prize twice, in 2002 and 2008, and a retrospective of his latest works was published on the blog clubturgot.com in March 2024.
